How to Use Wax Melts Safely: Full Bricks, Portions & Warmers

To use wax melts safely, place a small portion in an approved warmer, keep the melted wax comfortably below the dish rim and follow the warmer manufacturer’s directions. Start with less than you think you need. Let that portion melt completely before deciding whether to add more.

Le Maire wax melts come as full soy wax bricks rather than pre-separated cubes. That gives you control over the amount you use, but the full brick is not meant to be melted all at once. This guide explains how to portion a brick, set up an electric warmer, change cooled wax and avoid the mistakes that cause spills or wasted aroma.

Full-brick wax melts versus wax cubes

Pre-separated wax cubes give you fixed sections. A full brick gives you one solid piece that you break or cut into smaller portions. Both styles are used the same way once the wax is in the warmer: the dish heats the wax and releases the aroma without lighting a wick.

The main difference is portion control. A cube may still be too large for a compact dish, while a full brick lets you choose a smaller piece from the start. The safe amount is determined by your warmer’s capacity—not by the shape of the package.

Why Le Maire uses full wax melt bricks

Each Le Maire wax melt is poured as a full 2.5 oz / 71 g brick measuring approximately 3 × 2 × 1 inches. The brick is wrapped in compostable parchment and packed in a recyclable kraft box designed in our Smyrna, Tennessee, home studio.

The full-brick design supports a straightforward routine: choose the character aroma you want, remove a controlled portion and save the rest for later. You are not locked into a pre-cut section that may be larger than your warmer needs.

Our bricks are made in small batches with natural soy wax, phthalate-free aroma oils and no dyes. Browse the complete Handmade Soy Wax Melts collection to explore the current character lineup.

How much wax melt should you use?

There is no universal number of grams or pieces that works for every warmer. Dish depth, width, heat output and room airflow all affect the result. The correct starting amount is the amount your warmer manufacturer recommends and the dish can contain without approaching the rim.

Begin with one small portion. Once it has melted into a complete pool, check the level in the dish and evaluate the aroma. Add more only if the manufacturer allows it and the liquid wax will remain safely below the rim.

Signs you have enough wax

  • The melted wax sits well below the edge of the dish.
  • The aroma develops after the wax forms a complete melt pool.
  • The dish is easy to handle once the warmer is off and fully cool.

Signs you may be using too much

  • The liquid wax is close to the rim.
  • The dish looks crowded before the wax has melted.
  • You are adding wax before the first portion has had time to warm.

How to portion a full-brick wax melt

Work with the wax while it is cool and solid. Break or carefully cut off a small piece on a stable surface. Put the unused brick back into its parchment and kraft box so the character name and aroma remain easy to identify.

  1. Check the warmer instructions and dish capacity.
  2. Remove the wax brick from its packaging.
  3. Break or cut a small portion from the brick.
  4. Return the remaining wax to its original packaging.
  5. Place only the portioned piece in the clean, dry warmer dish.

Do not try to cut warm or partly melted wax. Do not force a full brick into a small dish, and never stack wax above the dish rim.

How to use an electric wax warmer

  1. Place the warmer upright on a flat, stable and heat-resistant surface.
  2. Leave clear space around it and keep it away from drafts and flammable items.
  3. Make sure the warming dish is clean, dry and seated correctly.
  4. Add one small wax portion.
  5. Turn on the warmer according to its instructions.
  6. Keep the warmer in view while it operates.
  7. Turn it off before leaving the room or going to sleep.
  8. Allow the wax and dish to cool completely before touching or moving them.

Never add water, alcohol, essential oil or another liquid to melted wax. A wax warmer is not a humidifier or simmer pot.

Using the Primitive Black 2-in-1 warmer

The Primitive Black 2-in-1 warmer is a compact countertop unit measuring 5.4 inches wide, 5.4 inches deep and 3.4 inches high. Its removable bronze-toned dish is used for wax melts. With the dish removed, the 3.9-inch warming plate can hold a compatible jar candle up to 10 oz, provided the jar sits fully and securely on the plate.

Use the dish for wax melts or remove it for a compatible candle. Do not use both at the same time. Because the unit is compact, portion the full brick before placing wax in the dish.

Common wax-melt mistakes to avoid

Melting the entire brick

A Le Maire brick contains multiple uses. Putting the full brick into a compact dish can overfill it once the wax liquefies.

Assuming more wax means more aroma

More wax is not always the answer. Allow a complete melt pool to form before judging performance. Warmer temperature, room size and airflow also affect how the aroma carries.

Adding water or essential oil

Keep the dish dry. Le Maire wax melts are already made with aroma oil, so nothing needs to be mixed into them.

Moving hot liquid wax

Turn off the warmer and let everything cool before moving the unit. Liquid wax can spill even when the dish does not look full.

Leaving the warmer unattended

Electric warmers still produce heat. Keep the warmer monitored and follow the operating limits in its instructions.

How to change a wax melt safely

Turn the warmer off and wait until the wax and dish are completely cool. Follow the removal method provided by the warmer manufacturer. Do not pry against a fragile dish, pour hot wax into a sink or drain, or use a sharp tool while the warmer is plugged in.

Before adding a new character aroma, confirm that the dish is clean, dry and free of damage. If you are moving from a deep aroma to a lighter one, cleaning the cooled dish according to the manufacturer’s directions helps keep the profiles distinct.

Choose an aroma, then control the portion

The same portioning method works across the Le Maire scent world. For an earthy fruit profile, try Blueberry Yum Yum, where ripe blueberry meets grounded notes and sweet musk. Read the related Blueberry Musk aroma guide before choosing it.

Whatever character you select, begin with a small portion and let the warmer do its work. Controlled use protects the dish, reduces waste and gives you a clearer sense of how the aroma performs in your space.

Wax melt safety questions

Can I use a whole Le Maire wax melt brick?

No. The full brick is designed to be portioned. Use only the amount recommended for your approved warmer and keep melted wax below the dish rim.

Can I mix two character aromas?

You can combine compatible wax melts if your warmer manufacturer allows it, but the total amount still needs to remain within the dish capacity. Start small so you can evaluate the blend without overfilling.

Can I leave an electric warmer on when I leave home?

No. Turn it off before leaving it unattended and allow the wax and dish to cool before moving the unit.

Can I reuse melted wax?

Wax can be warmed again while it remains clean and still gives the aroma you want. Stop using it if it becomes contaminated, and follow the warmer manufacturer’s cooled-wax removal directions when changing it.

Build a safer wax-melt setup

Start with a compatible warmer, choose a character from the Le Maire wax melt collection and portion the brick to match the dish. That simple routine gives you better control from the first melt to the last.
